NEWS TIDBITS 

 

1.  According to visitors, the new courts are “the talk of Seattle.”  Congratulations to us!

2.  Welcome to our new Board members and thanks to the retiring Board members.

3.  PCOC is working hard at making the transition to the new courts as smooth as possible.  Patience is a virtue….

4.  There is limited play at the Boys and Girls Club; watch the calendar for times and dates.

5)  Keep the court surface in good repair by avoiding the dirt and pea gravel area on the south side of the courts.

6)  Our Lavender Festival work and booth brought in $1,958.10.  (Where did that 10 cents come from?)

7)  The Ribbon-Cutting ceremony was a joyous affair; our 92-year-young guest of honor was delightful, and the ceremony was punctuated with much humor and praise.

8)  Open Play:  winners stay and split, losers vacate the court and the next two players in line enter the court.  Player rating is not a consideration.

9)  Rated Play: members play on the courts according to their skill and rating level; winners stay and play as a team, losers vacate the court and the next two players or team in line with the correct rating enter the court. If a doubles team wins 3 games in a row and there are players waiting the winning team exits the court and waits their turn in line to challenge again if they wish.

10)  Court protocol questions should be directed to Christy.

11)  As of August 1, Cathy Hathaway will be your new go-to person for newsletter, website, and other areas of communication.  I am so pleased and fortunate to be handing off my duties to such a capable lady.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Greetings SP,

Things have been busy the last couple of months.  The new board members have now stepped into their new positions, and we are all eager to work with you to get much done in the coming year.  We are excited to work with the new board members, while we are sad to say goodbye to our retiring board members:  Charlie, Katinka, Denise, Jan, Margie, Marc, and Robert.  They all did an incredible job on behalf of the SP, and without their dedication, time, and brain power, none of what has been accomplished would have happened.  So I say Thank You on behalf of the SP and hope that we can still use your talents in other ways.  Go enjoy what you worked so hard for, and we will see you on the courts!

We finally saw the dream become a reality with the brand new eight, tournament-quality, courts being completed.  Christiane and I have not seen the final results in person, but we look forward to playing on them upon our return.  I sincerely hope everyone is enjoying the courts and appreciates how fortunate we are to have them.  Please be considerate of them, and help us to keep them in top-notch condition.

The ribbon cutting/opening ceremony was a big success. Again, unfortunately, we were gone during the event but heard it was a good turnout and fun.

The next big thing coming up is our first regional tournament.  Being on the committee, I see how much work and effort is being put forth by the committee members which are Christy M., Debbie M., Katinka N., Mike C., Pam W., and Suzi S.  They, alone, cannot make this a successful tournament; it is going to take a village.  So if you have volunteered to help, thank you; and if you have not, it is time to do so.  The volunteers will be helping with anything from parking assistance, sign-ins, refereeing, and cleanup, to name a few.  So, step up and volunteer to do your part.  We have proven that when the SP work together, great things happen.  Let’s continue this as a team. 

I apologize for missing so many important things lately, but look forward to making up lost time and moving our club forward.  Thank you all again.

LAVENDER FESTIVAL BOOTH RESULTS

For the past 4 years, the Sequim Picklers have participated in the Lavender Festival.  We continue to show our community spirit and play a large role in Sequim’s largest annual festival by volunteering each year with several tasks to ensure the success of the festival.  

A huge THANK YOU to the following who generously gave their time and volunteered to help with the chalking and marking the vendor booths, the set up and tear down of the beer garden, checking and load-in of the vendors, and manning the Sequim Pickler booth.  We cannot forget to also give a SHOUT OUT to our talented and giving picklers for donating the 8 items we raffled during the lavender festival.  We couldn’t have done it without each and every one of you.  I saw great enthusiasm, wonderful camaraderie, and true ambassadors to the Sequim Picklers.

To the efficient, mathematical picklers who utilized the festival map and successfully marked off every vendor and food booth, THANK YOU: Robert Knapp, George Davis, Kathy Mahnerd, Eric Mahnerd, Robert Ball, Nicolaas Holt, Chuck Madden and Charlie Pugh.

To the strong manly picklers who carried all the fencing and concrete posts to put together a huge beer garden.  And if that wasn’t hard enough they had to tear it down and store the equipment back in the shed. THANK YOU:  Richard Cary, Stu Sherman, Gary Poor, Robert Olson, and Jay Marazon.

To the helpful and courteous picklers who checked in and directed each and every vendor to their respective spots.  THANK YOU: Charlie Szumilas, Susan Szumilas, Richard Cary, and Anne Elwell.

To all the ambassadors to the Sequim Picklers who attempted to stop every visitor at the Lavender Festival and diplomatically suggested they could be the lucky winner of 1 of 8 raffle items. Last but not least, a HUGE thank you to my hubby Charlie, there by my side helping with all the emails, helping with coordinating the volunteers, the chalking, helping me put up and take down the booth and taking his turn with me and seeing how many tickets he can get people to put into the raffle boxes.

LAVENDER FESTIVAL RAFFLE RESULTS

Here are pictures of the lavender raffle winners, with exception of Noreen Warwick, who won the necklace, and a winner in Port Orchard where we left the cat oil paintings prize on their porch, per their request.  Note that one winner won two prizes (table and Barry the Blue heron):

RIBBON CUTTING REPORT

I want to thank the ribbon-cutting, planning committee of Ruby Pugh, Pat Joersz, Patricia Knapp, and Glynda Ball for their outstanding court dedication program.  The entire program was a huge hit!  Marty Hoffman kicked off the ceremony with his wit and humor as he introduced each speaker and kept the aggressive agenda on track.  The weather could not have been better, and we had an amazing turnout.  We thank Deputy Mayor Candice Pratt for her support and Dave Shreffler, who with the assistance of the new Pickleball Evangelists (PE), led us in a new pickleball cheer.  Great job by Robert Rankin and his committee (Katinka Nanna, Denise Cordero, Ross Brown, and Cathy Hathaway) who introduced and unveiled the Recognition Plaque, Court Named Plaque for Christiane Johnson, and the bronze Dedication Plaque created by Ross Brown with the inscription “partners fulfilling a dream” that is embedded in the court entrance corridor.

The courts were decorated with lavender, the cake decoration was awesome, and it tasted good too!  Sharman’s cookies were yummy and a great surprise for the picklers. 

As for the guest speaker, we are all so fortunate to have had the 92-year-young, Barney McCallum, the last surviving founder of the game of pickleball, attend in person.  The question of where the name “pickleball” came from is now put to rest having heard Barney say emphatically that it came from Pickles the dog!  He also told us that he did not name the no volley zone the kitchen, nor did he know where that name came from; but he felt that the name was very appropriate.

COURT TALK

SUMMER IS HERE!  

Summer has arrived and with it, lots of gorgeous weather to play on our new outdoor courts.  The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was wonderful, and it officially signals the opening, so let the shenanigans and fun begin.  Check the Courts Play Schedule for which organized play is scheduled for each day.  We’ve had a few people step up to help with court monitoring, we are still VERY MUCH in need of more.  Without members volunteering to step up, the club is unable to provide the quality of play we have all become accustomed to.  While we understand that there is life outside of pickleball (I know it’s hard for some to imagine), this club runs and operates because volunteers choose to step up and commit to help.  I’d like to personally THANK all who have done just that.  We all APPRECIATE the commitment you all have pledged to the club and the game of pickleball.  

While we’ve had a few hiccups in the daily dealings at the outdoor courts, the overall vibe is that everyone is EXTREMELY happy and excited.  I know that we’ve added new members as well as have already attracted players from all over the country and as far as New Zealand.  Granted, they were just passing through on vacation, but they were pleasantly surprised to find such lovely, world-class courts in Sequim and on the Olympic Peninsula.  That is a direct quote by the way!  We will be hoping that is also the feel we exude when we host the Blue Hole Bash in September.  As you can imagine, lots of work and planning is currently going on getting everything set and in place to host our first regional tournament.  Again, we need LOTS of volunteers.  Please see me if you are interested. 

INDOOR PLAY

If you’ve been missing indoor play, don’t fret.  It will be back in action once the weather and daylight hours decline.  Continue to check the schedule weekly for days that we may be playing.  With the outdoor courts in full swing, we’ve had extremely low numbers at the Boys and Girls Club.  While I love each and every one of you, opening for four or six people on Sunday morning when I could be home with my family makes it a hard sale for me or my other compadres who volunteer to open.  The weather is too nice to be indoors anyway!  

Just keep checking the play calendar for possible times to play indoor.  We usually have it updated at least a week ahead of time.  If you have a question, please feel free to email me about it.  

Court Etiquette                        

I wanted to talk about a possible issue that may be happening at the outdoor courts.  Currently, we don’t have a paddle system in place on the courts.  We are going on the “honor system” of who goes in next.  When it is OPEN PLAY, whether you are a 2.0 or a 5.0, whichever court becomes vacant first, the person who has been in line goes next.  There is no:  you are a 3.0 and we’re 4.0’s business.  It’s open play.  That means everyone plays with everyone.  There is no waiting at a certain court and continually keeping the same players rotating in and out on one court either.  If you want to play with a certain person or group, you all wait in line and work your way into the queue.   That is the technical definition of OPEN PLAY.  IF you want ranked play, check out those days we have slated for your ranking.  Open Play is a social play and gives our newer members and players a chance to increase their play with upper level players.  It also gives upper level players a chance to work on certain aspects of their games while also giving advice and support to our lower ranked players.  We were all the newbie once.  Let’s welcome our new and beginning players and help them achieve their best play possible. It’s a win, win for all.

That’s all for now Folks.  I’d like to say thanks to the Outgoing Board Members and thank them for their contributions.  Let’s make sure to give them each a personal thanks and hug/handshake.  Let’s also remember that this organization runs on volunteers and their hard work and energy.  It’s easy to forget that each and everyone has a life outside of pickleball and the time contributed is precious.  Let’s be kind to each other and work for the success of the club.

REFEREE CLINIC 

Another referee clinic will be offered in August in preparation for our Blue Hole Bash Tournament in September.  It will speak well of us if we can provide refs for most of the matches.

Ten individuals participated in the clinic on July 26 and are on their way to becoming capable officials.  Thank you, Sequim Picklers, for letting these folks practice during our club play at Carrie Blake Park and the Boys’ and Girls’ Club.

I have had some interest from players who would just like to learn more about the rules of pickleball without having to commit to being a referee.  I will gladly provide a session which I would call  “Rules, Do’s & Don’ts, and Procedures.”   This would be a fun class and members would definitely come away with information that will help them be a more astute player.
