Tidbits collected by Club Communications Director Jan Tatom
I would like to thank all of the members who have stepped up to fill the various task-management roles that are so essential to our club. It is great to see so many willing to help make the cub grow and keep all the activities going. There are always growing pains and learning curves to get through, but by working together as we have, all things can be accomplished.
I look forward to seeing all the members show off their well-earned skills at the upcoming tournament in Port Angeles. Remember: win or lose, having a little competition is always good and fun.

COURT CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
We are excited that our efforts to build courts is continuing forward on a schedule that was worked out last year. The local contractor, Interwest Construction, is scheduled to have their pre-construction meeting in early February with the City engineers and our Sequim Pickler (SP) pro-bono architect, Christiane Johnson, doing business as KataTjuta Architecture. After the first meeting, the schedule will be adjusted based on expected weather temperatures but generally it looks something like this:
• Week of Feb 5 – Pre-Construction meeting with contractor (SP architect to attend)
• Week of Mar 5 – Approval of contractor to proceed with site preparation. Contract must conclude within 75 days of this notice to proceed.
• Week of Apr 2 – First approved date that contractor can begin concrete pour. (Concrete must have a 30 day cure period above freezing)
• Week of May 7 – Possible start for surfacing and line painting
The SP board will be busy with two upcoming board meetings. The agendas are long in order to work on many aspects of getting these new courts up and running with a schedule that works for the SP, the public, and considering the City of Sequim agreement terms. Oh, and we also need to pick a date for our first regional tournament.
To acquaint the membership with the City agreement terms that are currently in effect, I put together a brief reference guide that lays out the primary key decision points. It also has links to the full agreement, estimated future maintenance costs, and an example of how an annual schedule of outdoor play might look. Click on the link below to view the City Agreement Reference Guide:
The Pickleball Court Operations Committee (PCOC) will be asked to work on this annual schedule and present the board with their best plan in the next few months. If you have ideas for the PCOC to consider, please attend one of their meetings or contact one of their members with your input.

From the DOC’s Corner
Hey Picklers, one and all! It’s been a very busy time in our club over the past month or so. Besides all the new appointments to the club’s staff, including myself, we’ve also gained a few new members. Welcome to you all! You’ve chosen an exciting time to become part of our ever-changing and thriving club. Now, on to what we’ve been up to!
THE SP BOARD, AND PCOC, are actively working to get the finishing touches in place for the opening of our new courts in Carrie Blake Park. Personally, it can’t come soon enough!
THE LEAGUE TEAM, headed by Mary Helen Benapfl, has just started their first Winter Ladder League and it’s proving to be a smash hit. Sorry if you haven’t already signed up, it’s closed to new entrants.
MARTY HOFFMAN is heading up the Referee Team and will be giving everyone a chance to get some much-needed training and coaching during league and open play. We are going to need experienced referees for our future endeavors. If you’d like to try it, give him a shout.
TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR SOUGHT. We are also working hard to put a new Tournament Director in place. My Asst. DOC, Mike Cooper, and I have started researching and making preparations for our first Sequim Picklers’ tournament. It’s slated to be held on the new courts sometime in September, 2018. We are hoping for over 125 entries. We’ve had some wonderful people step in beside us to help along the way. If you are interested in seeing just how a tournament works, there is an upcoming event in Port Angeles on Feb. 9th and 10th. There are lots of entries from our club so come and cheer them on while getting a feel for just how one works.
YOUTH CLINIC. As some of our seasoned members may remember, we host a Youth Clinic every year at the Boys & Girls Club. The clinic usually runs one day a week, over a period of 6 weeks. Not only are we introducing an entire generation to this sport we all love, we are giving back to our community in a big way. As a parent of a 7-year-old, I personally know the impact a mentor can have on a child. It really does take a village to raise a child. I am working with Dave, the B&G club director, to finalize the dates. We will need VOLUNTEERS to help run and help teach the kids. If you are interested, contact me and I’ll give you the details once they are in place. It’s sure to be a fun and rewarding experience for all!
AS DOC, it’s my job to communicate effectively with all in our club, not just those on our board. If, for some reason, you have a complaint, or just some feedback regarding any aspect of the club, don’t hesitate to come to me. That is what I’m here for. If it’s an issue I can solve, wonderful. If not, I will gladly help in finding the best path to follow. I’m excited and proud to be your new Director of Court Operations. I look forward to starting some new programs, while keeping some of the old, and moving our club into the future. The future looks bright! Pickle ON!

Pickleball Court Operations Committee (PCOC)
The PCOC is now posting their Agenda/Minutes on the website providing easy access and transparency for the membership. CLICK HERE for the January meeting. Each meeting ‘post’ will include action items from the meeting, status on HIGH and LOW priority tasks as well as a list of tasks that are completed.
We encourage members to attend the meetings if they want to share information, voice concerns or ask questions about current and future Court Operations.
Next meeting is March 6th at 6:00 at the 5th Ave.
Please check out the new webpage – Court Operations Overview to see all the great people involved in court operations. Special thanks to our new boss lady, Christy Marazon for stepping up to be the new Director of Court Operations!
ITEM OF INTEREST: A new sign-in sheet is in place now for those playing at the Boys and Girls Club Gym. We added the liability waiver info to the top of the sign-in form to ensure that ALL players (members and guests) are covered under the waiver during that play time. Please help us make sure that everyone signs in every time!

SEQUIM PICKLERS T-SHIRTS!!!!!
Hey all you new members…….(and a few of you old hold outs). I still have most sizes and styles available. Now’s the time to show your enthusiasm for the club and the game.
Only $20.00 each, and the proceeds go to the new courts. I will have them available when I am at the courts or you can contact me at 509-999-7345 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Don’t be the only one who doesn’t have a T-Shirt as we get closer to the opening of our new courts! Thanks for supporting Sequim Picklers.
